• Electrification in Energy

Program Overview

UH Energy and the Subsea Systems Institute are proud to offer this program designed to introduce and deepen understanding of electrical engineering principles critical to electrification of the energy industry. Electrification plays a vital role in enhancing the efficiency, reliability, and environmental performance of energy systems across the value chain—from production and processing to transportation and end-use delivery.

This program responds directly to the increasing need for skilled professionals who can develop, operate, and maintain electrically powered infrastructure and ensure its safety and resilience. Participants will gain foundational and applied knowledge that supports the design, integration, and inspection of electrified systems within both traditional and emerging energy platforms, including offshore and subsea environments. By bridging engineering theory with real-world applications, the program prepares attendees to contribute meaningfully to the future of energy.

Credentialing Overview

The course is divided into 3 badges: Power Fundamentals, Offshore Power and Subsea Electrification. Each badge will consist of 1 Overview module, 5 learning modules and a lab activity. Content will be delivered by a mix of industry experts and UH faculty. Specifically,

Each badge consists of:

·         1 hybrid Overview module at the University of Houston (2-3 hours)

·         5 asynchronous online learning modules (1-2 hours)

·         1 in-person lab activity at the University of Houston (1-2 hours)

Participants must complete assessments and meet performance standards to earn each badge. Badges can be taken individually or as part of a 3-badge series that provides comprehensive foundational knowledge in electrification of offshore and subsea systems.

By the end of the program, you’ll be able to:

·         Gain awareness of the fundamentals of electrification in the energy industry

·         Understand the electrical architecture of major subsea energy systems

·         Comprehend the deployment of offshore electrical systems

Schedule

Instruction for each badge will consist of 1 Overview module, 5 learning modules, and a lab activity. Each badge will take about 2 months (6-8 weeks) to complete.

·         Badge 1: Power Fundamentals - Overview 1* will take place on August 15th, 2025. After that, the learning modules will take place on Fridays starting on September 19th. Some Fridays may be skipped in case of major UH      Energy events. The lab activity will take place the second or third week of October 2025.

·         Badge 2: Offshore Power** - January – March, 2026.

·         Badge 3: Subsea Electrification** - May – July, 2026.

*Overview 1 is a free sample class, and payment is not required to attend. However, payment is required to attend the rest of the badge. Overview 1 will be recorded and available to view for those who pay.

**The order of these badges may be swapped based on instructor availability

***Badges DO NOT need to be taken in order. E.g. you can skip Badge 1 and take Badges 2 and 3, take Badge 3 only, etc.

Pricing

·         Individual Badges (1, 2, or 3): $600 per badge

·         3-Badge Bundle: $1200 (each badge is $400)

Prerequisites

This course is appropriate for:

·         Managers that want a better understanding of electrical engineering to make decisions related to energy systems

·         Technicians and maintenance personnel who are involved in the day-to-day operation of energy systems

·         Energy industry personnel who want to extend their system capability by understanding more about electrical engineering

·         Undergrad and grad students about to graduate and join the workforce
